Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
