No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in national projects. They were built at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
